Samsung started using eco-friendly materials in its smartphones and home appliances last year. This year, the company used more such material to manufacture Galaxy S23 series smartphones. In the future, the company plans to do much more, including using 100% recycled plastic.

The South Korean firm announced that it wants to broaden the use of recycled plastic and other eco-friendly materials in its products to reduce environmental impact. The company has already used recycled materials, like ocean-bound plastic and 80% recycled PET, in the Galaxy S22, Galaxy S23, and some other high-end smartphones. By 2050, Samsung aims to use 100% recycled plastic in its smartphones.

Park Sung-sun, Executive VP and head of Samsung MX's Mechanical R&D Team, said, “You might question what impact our campaign can have on the Earth's environment, but it is quite a considerable amount given Samsung's vast product portfolio. We think it can have small but meaningful reverberations to each customer.

The Galaxy S23 uses recycled plastic for 12 internal components, up from six components in the Galaxy S22 series. The South Korean firm said that it can help reduce 15 tons of discarded fishing nets from the oceans by the end of 2023. Park Sung-sun also said that Samsung is working with other brands and partners to increase the recycling of rare materials such as gold and cobalt.
