We spent the last few days at MWC 2023 attending Samsung's booth and other exhibitions, and admittedly, we didn't find Samsung's presentations all that impressive. That's the downside of the tech giant hosting dedicated Unpacked launch events for high-end products separate from the industry. Nevertheless, one thing that stood out was the Samsung Display showcase, where we could play with various foldable device concepts in different shapes and sizes.
The Flex display Samsung demonstrated at MWC 2023 were never meant for mass production. They're prototype devices created by the Display arm rather than the mobile division. Samsung Display, by itself, doesn't produce and sell smartphones, but what it does is innovate display technologies for Samsung Electronics and other potential partners to use.
With that in mind, the Flex prototype devices at MWC 2023 are proof of concept and not a final product you'll have the chance to buy. Nevertheless, as far as the flex display technology itself is concerned, it's as impressive as always and shows great potential for a future in which diverse foldable phones and tablets exist for all sorts of use cases and preferences. Check out our tour of Samsung Display's booth at MW 2023.
Samsung Display showcased a handful of concept devices, including the Flex S, Flex G, Flex Note, and Slideable Flex Solo. The Flex S and G are dual-folding devices with relatively small footprints when folded, whereas the Flex Note is a single-folding notebook.
And last but not least, the Slideable Flex Solo demonstrates how Samsung Display's technology can be used for a slideable / rollable tablet rather than a folding one. It's mighty impressive, even though it might be a bit unrealistic for a consumer device. Nevertheless, slidable display technology could be used for smaller devices such as smartphones and eventually be sold next to traditional foldable phones.
Back to the real world of consumer products, Samsung foldable phone fans have two choices at the moment, namely the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4. They'll be succeeded by new models later this year. And according to some rumors, Samsung may expand its foldable device lineup in 2024.
