Motorola does what Samsung should’ve done with its Galaxy Z Flip lineup

Samsung is expected to launch the Galaxy Z Flip 5 later this year, featuring a faster processor and, more importantly, a bigger cover screen. This bigger screen makes the phone more usable even when folded shut. However, the South Korean firm isn't giving users what they want the most: a cheaper Galaxy Z Flip. But Motorola is moving in that direction.

According to a new report, Motorola plans to launch a cheaper version of its RAZR foldable smartphone. Called the Motorola RAZR Lite (not confirmed yet), the company's more affordable foldable smartphone will feature a small cover display, just like the Galaxy Z Flip 4. The smartphone seems to have a dual-camera setup for the rear-facing cameras and a punch-hole-shaped cutout for the inner selfie camera.

Samsung should take note of Motorola's strategy of making a more affordable flip phone

Since it has a smaller cover display, the phone will have limited functionality when closed. However, many might be willing to trade this disadvantage for a cheaper price tag. This is what Samsung needs to do to increase the adoption of foldable smartphones. If the company can continue the Galaxy Z Flip 4's design for a cheaper version of the smartphone, along with a slightly downgraded chipset (like the Snapdragon 7 Gen 2), it can sell it as a Galaxy Z Flip Fan Edition.

There have been rumors that Samsung wants to bring cheaper foldable phones to increase their adoption. However, those plans haven't materialized yet. If Samsung can bring a Fan Edition version of the Galaxy Z Flip at a lower price (say $699), it could sell really well and offer more consumers a chance to try out a foldable smartphone without spending $1,000.
