In April last year, a report revealed that Samsung SDI is developing stacked batteries for smartphones, allowing them to offer 10% higher battery capacity within the same volume. These batteries were expected to arrive with the Galaxy S23. That, unfortunately, didn’t happen. Going by recent leaks, it looks like Samsung could manage to offer stacked batteries with the Galaxy S24. However, a new report suggests that stacked batteries are coming sooner, starting with the Galaxy Z Flip 5.
A Twitter account with the handle @GaryeonHan has posted an image of an official-looking letter from the President & CEO of Samsung SDI thanking the company’s employees for their efforts towards developing a stacked battery for the Galaxy Z Flip 4. According to this tipster, Samsung tried to offer a battery with the stacking technology with the Galaxy Z Flip 4, but the project wasn’t completed on time, and Samsung had to go ahead with a traditional battery pack last year.
Galaxy Z Flip 5 might have a stacked battery
More importantly, the Twitter user suggests that the Galaxy Z Flip 5 might feature a stacked battery as Samsung might have had enough time to implement it. According to various leaks, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 has a 3,700mAh battery, similar to the Galaxy Z Flip 4. If the upcoming phone indeed has a stacked battery, the company might have used the 10% higher energy density to decrease the size of the battery rather than increasing the battery capacity to free up space for other features, such as the bigger cover screen.
If the speculation turns out to be true, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 will be the first Samsung smartphone with a stacked battery. Moreover, if the Galaxy Z Flip 5 has a stacked battery, the chances are high that the Galaxy Z Fold 5 might also feature this type of battery. We would love to see a bigger battery on the Galaxy Z Flip 5 rather than the extra features. Fortunately, we'll know if the news is true very soon as the launch is only a couple of hours away.
