A few months ago, Samsung claimed that the sales of its foldable phones had surpassed the sales of its last Galaxy Note generation, effectively saying that its foldable phones are now mainstream devices. Apparently, the company will complete its goal of selling more than 10 million foldable phones this year. However, the company is pushing for more next year.

Samsung may have set a goal of selling 20 million foldable phones in 2024

Apparently, Samsung is aiming to sell 20 million foldable phones in 2024. These numbers would include the sales of the Galaxy Z Flip 6, Galaxy Z Fold 6, and current-generation foldable phones (Z Flip 5 and Z Fold 5). However, that may be a tougher ask as Chinese firms, including Huawei, OnePlus, OPPO, Tecno, Vivo, and Xiaomi, are all bringing better-equipped or cheaper foldable phones to compete with Samsung's foldable lineup.

Samsung is reportedly aiming to launch thinner or better-equipped foldable phones next year. Some reports claim that the company may make aspect ratio changes to the Galaxy Z Fold 6 next year.

Chinese firms are pushing the envelope with their foldable phones

Last night, OPPO and OnePlus launched their foldable smartphones that have better screens, cameras, and batteries than the Galaxy Z Fold 5. Huawei, too, launched an impressively designed and specced phone, the Mate X3, earlier this year. Last month, it launched the Mate X5, which has similar dimensions to the Mate X3. The report claims that Samsung was surprised by Huawei's phone and is trying to reverse engineer the Mate X3 and the Mate X5 to see how the Chinese firm managed to fit a bigger battery than the Galaxy Z Fold 5 despite building slimmer devices.

Xiaomi, too, managed to fit a 4,800mAh battery inside the MIX Fold 3 despite the device being just 10.9mm thin. OnePlus and OPPO's new foldable phones are 11.7mm thin (compared to Z Fold 5's 13.4mm) but are powered by 4,800mAh batteries. However, they lack wireless charging and are rated at lower water resistance abilities. However, OnePlus will be sold in Europe and North America, markets where Chinese foldable phones haven't been launched yet.

Samsung needs to be prepared for upcoming threats, especially from Apple

Samsung needs to come up with more impressive hardware next year if it wants to keep the crown for the most successful foldable smartphone brand. Apple is also planning to launch a foldable device within a couple of years but reports claim that its first foldable device will be the iPad Mini.
