Samsung has unveiled a new image sensor today called the ISOCELL GNK. This 50-megapixel camera sensor will expand the photography and videography capabilities of many Samsung and indeed non-Samsung devices, as the company is one of the leading suppliers of image sensors in the market.
The new sensor boasts some impressive improvements over its predecessor, the ISOCELL GN1, including the ability to produce images with a dynamic range of up to 120dB. This is made possible by three different ISO modes that improve dynamic range while reducing motion artifact.
Phones with this sensor to arrive next year
The 50-megapixel ISOCELL GNK does retain the same 1/1.3″ size of its predecessor. It even has the same 1.2-micron pixel size, but Samsung has made improvements elsewhere to deliver enhanced photography and videography capabilities.
These include the likes of Dual Pixel Pro auto-focus which is capable of quickly focusing on objects in motion whenever they're in the frame. Pro users will appreciate the sensor's ability to capture 14-bit RAW images for more vibrant colors.
Video recording is possible at 8K resolution and 30 frames per second without much loss in the field of view. Autofocus is also supported for video in addition to HDR video in FHD mode with frame rates up to 240fps.
Samsung hasn't confirmed as yet which specific phones will come with this sensor. With its 2023 launches all but done, it goes without saying that the first Galaxy phones to utilize the new ISOCELL GNK sensor will be the ones that come out in 2024.
