Samsung is launching the Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 Ultra next month, and OnePlus is launching its own high-end phone to compete with Samsung's flagships. The OnePlus 12 was announced in China today and will be launched globally in early 2024. While the company hasn't announced a global launch date, reports reveal that it could be a January 23 launch.
OnePlus 12 launched in China today, features better specifications than Galaxy S24 Ultra in some aspects
The OnePlus 12, which was announced in China today, has a brighter screen and a bigger battery than the Galaxy S24 Ultra. According to several reports, the Galaxy S24 Ultra is expected to feature a 6.8-inch QHD+ OLED screen with 2,500 nits peak brightness and a 5,000mAh battery with 45W fast charging. In comparison, the OnePlus 12 has a 6.8-inch OLED screen with 4,500 nits peak brightness and a 5,400mAh battery with 100W fast charging. The phone also features a 120Hz refresh rate, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, and 1,600 nits peak brightness in HBM (High Brightness Mode). Its touchscreen reportedly works normally even when the fingers are wet.
It comes equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, which is identical to the chip that's rumored to be used in the Galaxy S24 Ultra. The OnePlus phone has a minimum of 12GB RAM and 256GB storage, and it goes as high as 24GB RAM and 1TB storage, which is mind-boggling for a phone. In comparison, the Galaxy S24 Ultra is rumored to feature 8GB RAM and 256GB storage in the lower-end variant and 12GB RAM + 1TB storage in the higher-end variant. This may give the OnePlus 12 a slight boost in performance, but only time will tell how these phones will fare against each other.
The OnePlus 12 has a 50MP 1/1.4-inch primary camera with OIS, a 48MP ultrawide camera with autofocus, a 64MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom and OIS, and a 32MP selfie camera. It can capture 8K 24fps videos or up to 4K 60fps videos. This is probably where the Galaxy S24 Ultra overtakes the OnePlus 12 with its 200MP primary camera with OIS, a 12MP ultrawide camera with autofocus, a 10MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom and OIS, a 50MP telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom and OIS. The Samsung phone can also record 8K 30fps videos and up to 4K 60fps videos. While the OnePlus 12 can record 4K 30fps videos using its front-facing camera, the Galaxy S24 Ultra can go up to 4K 60fps.
OnePlus has also improved the dust and water resistance rating on its newest flagship phone, but it is still IP65, which is lower than Galaxy S24 Ultra's possible IP68 rating. The OnePlus 12 also features Hasselblad Color Calibration for the camera, stereo speakers, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, NFC, USB 3.2 Type-C port, under-display optical fingerprint reader, and 50W wireless charging.
OnePlus 12 is much cheaper than Galaxy S24 Ultra
The OnePlus 12 starts at CNY 4,299 ($600) for the 256GB version and goes as high as CNY 5,799 ($810) for the version with 24GB RAM and 1TB storage. That's very cheap compared to the Galaxy S24 Ultra's rumored starting price of $1,200 for the 256GB version and $1,600 for the 1TB version. So, you can get almost the performance and features of a Galaxy S24 Ultra at the pricing of the base Galaxy S24 with the OnePlus 12.
