In October of 2023, Google amazed everyone by announcing that it would provide Android version upgrades and security updates to Pixel smartphones for a whopping seven years. That kind of commitment to software updates was simply unheard of in the smartphone market, with even Apple only supporting iPhones and iPads with five major iOS updates.
Samsung, as you may know, promises four major Android updates for its flagship and select mid-range and budget devices. Fans have been hoping that the Korean giant will follow in Google's footsteps and extend its update policy in response, but while Samsung hinted at the possibility in an interview with SamMobile at its developer conference, it hasn't officially announced any changes.
Seven years of security updates, or Android and One UI updates as well?
But that could change with the Galaxy S24 series. According to Android Headlines, Samsung's upcoming flagship will get updates for seven years! The publication doesn't confirm if the seven years will apply only to security updates, but hopefully, Android, One UI, and feature updates will also be included.
It will also be interesting to see if Samsung will extend the courtesy of seven years of updates to existing devices, like the Galaxy S23 and the Galaxy Z Fold 5. Samsung included both new and old devices when it switched from its long-standing policy of two major OS upgrades to three and subsequently four major OS upgrades, but the company might skip doing so considering how serious a seven-year commitment to software updates would be.
All will be revealed in just a few days. Samsung's Galaxy S24 Unpacked event is scheduled for January 17, and you will be able to watch it live from the comfort of your home. SamMobile will be on the ground to provide you with coverage on everything you want to know and more, so stay tuned!
