Nvidia announces G-Sync Pulsar to reduce motion blur

In 2014, Nvidia launched Ultra Low Motion Blur (ULMB) and in 2023, the company launched Ultra Low Motion Blur 2 (ULMB2). Both technologies aim to reduce motion blur in a display/monitor by using a technique called backlight strobing. However, neither ULMB nor ULMB2 works with a variable refresh rate (VRR). VRR is a feature that syncs a monitor’s refresh rate and a graphics card’s output. It is offered in many forms, including AMD FreeSync, Nvidia G-Sync, and VESA Adaptive Sync. Well, to solve that issue, Nvidia has launched a new technology at CES 2024, and it is called Nvidia G-Sync Pulsar.

What is Nvidia G-Sync Pulsar?

From what we could understand from the press release, the G-Sync Pulsar brings ULMB2 and VRR together. That means it offers backlight strobing in conjunction with a variable refresh rate, allowing people to enjoy a high refresh rate and low motion blur on a monitor at the same time. In other words, the output from the graphics card, the refresh rate of the monitor, and the backlight strobing frequency of the monitor are synced. That sounds tricky to achieve but Nvidia says that it found the solution with a “novel algorithm.

Monitors with G-Sync Pulsar coming this year

According to the company, this technology offers motion clarity of over 1,000Hz. If I am not wrong, Asus also offers similar technology in the form of ELMB in its monitors. Anyway, the G-Sync Pulsar requires special hardware from Nvidia to work, and according to many people who attended the event, Nvidia will offer it only with G-Sync Ultimate monitors. There are no models at the moment offering this feature. However, Nvidia says that Asus will launch the ROG Swift PG27 Series monitor later this year with G-Sync Pulsar.

G-Sync comes to GeForce Now

Along with G-Sync Pulsar, Nvidia has announced that GeForce Now, which is the company’s cloud gaming platform, now supports Nvidia G-Sync. That means if you have a G-Sync monitor and you are gaming on GeForce Now, the refresh rate of your monitor and the output (framerate) from GeForce Now will be in sync. That will eliminate stuttering and tearing for smoother visuals and a better gaming experience.
