The Galaxy S24 series is finally here! The lineup has three phones: Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 Ultra. All three phones have brighter screens, improved cameras, faster performance, and longer battery life. However, only the priciest of the three—Galaxy S24 Ultra—is getting a more durable material.
Galaxy S24 Ultra has a titanium body for added strength
The Galaxy S24 Ultra is Samsung's first smartphone that uses titanium material in its body. The side rails of the phone use titanium. The front of the device is protected using Gorilla Glass Armor, while its rear is covered by Gorilla Glass Victus 2. Despite what many could expect, the Galaxy S24 Ultra isn't significantly lighter than the Galaxy S23 Ultra despite its titanium build. The Galaxy S24 Ultra weighs 232g, which is just 2g lighter than the Galaxy S23 Ultra.
This misunderstanding may stem from the drastic (20g) weight reduction that the iPhone 15 Pro received compared to the iPhone 14 Pro after switching to a titanium build. Apple used stainless steel in its earlier phones, and it is heavier than the aluminum that Samsung uses in its phones. So, switching from stainless steel to titanium resulted in a drastic drop in weight for the new iPhone. However, Samsung was already using lighter aluminum material for its high-end phones till the Galaxy S23 Ultra. Titanium is stronger than aluminum, not lighter. So, the Galaxy S24 Ultra is stronger than the Galaxy S23 Ultra, and that's where the advantage lies. It should theoretically hold up better against drops, but even that depends on the angle and other metrics of the fall.
