Samsung unveiled its new QD-OLED TVs at the Consumer Electronics Show 2024 in Las Vegas back in January. The new lineup includes the S85D, S90D, and S95D which boast improved brightness, better colors, and a handful of AI features.

The company appears to be dual-sourcing panels from both Samsung Display and LG Display for one model in particular, the S90D. As the main OLED TV, the S90D is likely going to account for most of the sales.

Panel technology split likely for the new S90D TV

Samsung Display continues to supply QD-OLED panels to Samsung for OLED TVs whereas LG Display provides White OLED or W-OLED panels. Samsung has largely relied on Samsung Display's QD-OLED panels for its OLED TVs until last year.

The S90C, predecessor to the current S90D, utilized QD-OLED panels in the 55, 65, and 75-inch sizes whereas the 83-inch model had a W-OLED panel. That's becauase Samsung Display doesn't make a panel that large. Now, Korean media is reporting that Samsung will start a more wider use of W-OLED panels in its OLED TVs.

The 42, 48, and 83-inch models of the new S90D will likely use LG's W-OLED panels. Both QD-OLED and W-OLED will be utilized in 55, 65, and 75-inch sizes, with Samsung offering one in certain regions and the other elsewhere.

Samsung Display's new QD-OLED panels used in these TVs provide an up to 144Hz refresh rate with HDR10+ support and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro. They're said to be 20% brighter than the previous panel.
