Google has announced that it will be holding the next Google I/O event on 14 May 2024. In a post on X/Twitter, the company also revealed that at this event, it will be making “AR announcements.” Considering that Google is working with Qualcomm and Samsung on Samsung’s upcoming XR headset, the announcements that Google will make about AR headsets may be directly related to the upcoming XR headset from Samsung. In other words, Google might reveal some of the features of Samsung’s upcoming XR headset at Google I/O 2024.
In February 2023, Samsung revealed that it was developing an XR headset in collaboration with Google and Qualcomm. Since then, we’ve had many leaks and rumors related to the upcoming product, including that the South Korean tech giant has created a separate team for it and that the brand might launch it alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and the Galaxy Z Flip 6 in July this year. Samsung’s upcoming XR headset might use Google’s Android-based platform for XR headsets, Qualcomm’s latest and flagship chipset for XR headsets, the Snapdragon XR 2+ Gen 2, and Sony’s micro-OLED display.
The general expectation is that Samsung might launch its upcoming XR headset at a much lower price than the Apple Vision Pro, which means that it could cost similar to the Meta Quest 3. As such, Samsung’s upcoming XR headset might compete directly with the Meta Quest 3 rather than the Apple Vision Pro. That being said, people will pit it against the one from Apple, even though there will be a lot of price difference between the two. Recently, Samsung launched another kind of wearable, the Galaxy Ring. You can learn all about it in our video below.
