Yesterday's Google I/O 2024 event was all about AI. There were so many announcements about AI that even Google kept track of how often the word ‘AI' was used in the keynote (122 times). One of those AI features includes the ability to ask Google Photos to display images or videos matching detailed descriptions.

Google Photos is getting Gemini integration

Google is integrating its Gemini AI assistant into Google Photos. This allows users to ask for specific images or videos that match detailed descriptions. For example, you can ask the app to show images of your kids and how their swimming has improved over the years. Google Photos will sift through all your photos uploaded in the cloud and display images right from when your kids first started to learn swimming to videos of winning a competition and images of winning certificates or awards.

Google Photos Ask Photos Gemini Google IO 2024

Google showcased an example of a user asking Gemini inside Google Photos about their car's license plate. It sifted through all the images of cars, identified the most frequently appearing car in the Google Photos library, and returned with an image in which the car's license plate is clearly visible. It even offered the license plate number as a voice reply.

Gemini uses several identifiers (day, date, location, time, and other objects in images) to find information about things a user needs. This feature works with videos, too, but Google didn't have a live demo for it. This feature will start rolling out to users “this summer,” but it isn't clear if it will roll out only in some countries or worldwide.

Samsung has also used several AI features in its stock Gallery app in One UI 6.1. However, those features are mostly related to image editing features, and you can find out how they work in our detailed video below. AI also improved search within the Gallery app on devices running One UI 6.1.

Google is constantly improving Gemini, its newest AI assistant that runs on large language models (LLMs) and large vision models (LVMs). It was revealed a few months ago and has already started replacing Google Assistant for most features. At the Google I/O event yesterday, Google announced integration with Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Photos, Google Workspace, and YouTube.

Soon, Google Gemini will completely replace Google Assistant, and it can be used on all Galaxy smartphones and tablets once the replacement is complete.
