Samsung not only focuses on flagship Android phones, but it also has a huge portfolio of phones ranging from budget to premium mid-range smartphones. The Galaxy A series, for example, has been the company's best-selling smartphone series. In fact, the company is all set to revamp its Galaxy A series this month.

According to the latest report by market research firm Omdia via The Elec, Samsung's LCD smartphone shipments surpassed the OLED smartphone shipments for 2021. Notably, the firm managed to ship 135.1 million units of OLED smartphones and 135.8 million units of LCD smartphones last year.

When we compare these numbers to 2020, it shows that OLED smartphone shipments decreased by 15%. LCD smartphone shipments, on the other hand, increased by 41%, which is a significant margin. Moreover, the budget to mid-range segment shipments witnessed an increase of 68.7% in 2021.

OLED smartphone growth rate will be pretty slow this year

The reason behind Samsung's increased production of LCD smartphones could be to offset the global price increase of components. Besides, the average selling price (ASP) of OLED smartphones was higher as compared to the previous year.

Samsung is expected to continue with its cost-cutting policy going forward, as the global component shortage is still hurting tech industries across the globe.

Another report by market research firm Counterpoint Research predicts that the shipment of OLED smartphones will be slow this year as well. Previously, the research firm predicted that OLED smartphone shipments increased by 10% over the previous year. But this year, the growth rate is speculated to increase only by 2%.
