Samsung planning to locally manufacture 4G and 5G gear in India

Samsung is reportedly planning to locally manufacture 4G and 5G gear in India. According to DIGITIMES Asia, the Korean telecom gear manufacturer is in talks with Indian telecom giants Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio to indigenously produce 4G and 5G products.

Furthermore, Samsung has also made its intentions clear to the DoT (Department of Telecommunications) in India that it is interested in phase 2 of the country's PLI scheme. It has written a letter to the Indian government about the same.

In mid-2021, the company decided not to take part in the PLI scheme for network equipment. The company reasoned that back then, it wasn't a viable option to set up a network equipment plant in India with just one client, i.e., Reliance Jio.

Now, however, with multiple players in the Indian telecom industry, Samsung thinks it's the right time for it to enter and support the local manufacturing of 4G and 5G gears in India.

Bharti Airtel is also looking for other suppliers apart from Nokia and Ericsson

Besides, the company has also conveyed to the DoT officials that it has sufficient capacity to meet the demand for Jio's 4G market in its Vietnam, South Korea, and China plants.

Bharti Airtel is also looking beyond European suppliers such as Nokia and Ericsson. On the other hand, Reliance Jio is currently testing its own end-to-end 5G network equipment across the country.

Industry sources claim that Jio may give business to Samsung as the latter is the 4G gear provider for Reliance Jio. Moreover, Samsung is conducting 5G field trials with Jio currently.
