Quick Share to improve on Galaxy Chromebooks for easier file sharing

Samsung's Quick Share file-sharing system got a huge boost when Google integrated Android's Nearby Share into it. Quick Share now works on Android phones, Chromebooks, and Windows computers. Google is now making wireless file sharing even easier with a new change.

Galaxy Chromebook Quick Share will soon be enabled by default

Although Galaxy Chromebooks (and other Chromebooks) already have the Quick Share feature, it isn't turned on by default. You have to enable it before you can start sharing files from and to your Galaxy (or other branded) phone or tablet. According to a report from Android Authority, Google is thinking of enabling the feature by default.

Google ChromeOS Chromebook Quick Share Enable By Default

A few days ago, Google reportedly introduced a new flag called ‘Quick Share V2' in ChromeOS (version 128 Canary). When enabled, it turns on Quick Share by default with visibility set to ‘Your Devices.' It will also remove the toggle to turn Quick Share off or on, so you won't be able to turn Quick Share off completely, but you don't need to.

When Quick Share's visibility is set to ‘Your Devices,' only your personal devices signed into the same Google account can see your Chromebook and vice versa. Google seems to have also removed the ‘Selected Contacts' feature from Quick Share v2. So, you won't be able to selectively choose contacts to whom you want your Chromebook to be visible. It is either no one or everyone.

These changes will bring Quick Share on Chromebooks in line with how the feature behaves on Android smartphones and tablets. Since this feature is in the testing phase right now, it could take a few weeks or months before it is released to the stable version of ChromeOS.

Google also seems to be working on a significant change to Quick Share, which enables direct peer-to-peer file sharing between devices. This means that the shared files don't have to travel from one device to the router and then to the other device. Files can transfer directly from one device to another, making the sharing process much faster.
