After launching its first QD-OLED TV earlier this year, Samsung recently started supplying its QD-OLED panels for monitors. Dell (Alienware), MSI, and Samsung launched their QD-OLED monitors recently. Now, LG trying to enter the OLED gaming monitor market with its cheaper OLED panels.
According to a report from OLED-Info, LG Display will start producing 27-inch WOLED panels for small TVs and gaming monitors as early as the end of this month (October 2022). LG Electronics will likely be LG Display's first customer, and it could launch a 27-inch OLED gaming monitor in Q1 2023.
Samsung and LG would compete directly in the OLED monitor space, and things will get interesting
Samsung's competitor in the display manufacturing space could also start making 32-inch WOLED panels by the end of this year. This display will most likely be used in gaming monitors rather than TVs. That’s because a 32-inch OLED TV could be much costlier than its LCD counterpart, and it will be hard for LG to justify its price. On the other hand, the price of a 32” OLED monitor could be justifiable to gaming enthusiasts.
What does this mean for the rest of the market? Well, the upcoming gaming monitors using LG’s WOLED panels will go up right against those using Samsung’s QD-OLED technology, including the brand’s own Odyssey G8 OLED. We could finally see some competition in the OLED monitor market, which would mean the prices of OLED monitors could go down.
The report also claims that LG will increase the production of its sub-40” WOLED panels to push OLED technology even in the mid-size TV segment. According to OLED-Info, LG is taking all these steps as the company is concerned about declining demand for its (OLED) TV panels.
Is LG also concerned about Samsung’s QD-OLED technology taking the market by the breeze? That’s also very likely, looking at all the great reviews the Samsung S95B TV and the Odyssey G8 monitor have received so far. Either way, things will get much more interesting in the mid and large-size OLED segment soon.
