Over the past year, Samsung has launched not one but three 200MP camera sensors for smartphones. The ISOCELL HP1 was the company's first 200MP sensor, and it has been used in the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra. The company's two other sensors are smaller than the ISOCELL HP1, and the latest in the lineup is being used in Xiaomi's new phone.

The ISOCELL HPX, launched last week, is used in Xiaomi's new mid-range smartphone. The Redmi Note 12 Pro+, which is to be launched on October 27 in China, is one of the three phones that the Chinese firm is teasing. The ISOCELL HPX is a slightly modified version of the ISOCELL HP3 that was launched earlier this year.

The ISOCELL HPX is a a 1/1.4-inch sensor with 200MP resolution, 16-in-1 pixel binning, and QPD autofocus. In its 16-in-1 pixel binning mode, the sensor can capture 12.5MP images with 2.24µm pixels. Yes, it can also capture 200MP photos with 0.56µm pixels, but it should only be used when there's enough ambient light.

The sensor also features staggered HDR, 14-bit color depth, 4K video recording at 120fps, and 8K video recording at 30fps. However, even high-end phones don't have processors with ISPs powerful enough to take advantage of 4K 120fps video recording. We expect more mid-range and affordable high-end phones to use Samsung's 200MP camera sensors.

Part of the problem with Exynos chips is their fabrication quality. Samsung Foundry, which has historically made Exynos chips, isn't as good at fabricating chips as TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company). So, Samsung might do something unthinkable and get its Exynos chips made by its rival TSMC. Future Exynos chips could be made by TSMC […]
