The Galaxy S4 Active, with its ruggedized exterior, was no doubt a hit for Samsung, since they thought it important enough to give it an upgrade that would put a Snapdragon 800 processor underneath. But was it enough of a hit to make Samsung start working on a low-cost variant of the device? Well, that seems to be the case, as a mid-range device – sporting model number GT-I8580 – with the S4 Active's looks has popped up on numerous places.
Chinese certification forum Tenaa has published a photo of a device that has the ruggedized back, home, and menu buttons as seen on the standard S4 Active – there's little chance this will have S4 Active in its name, but it does serve as an indicator of Samsung's newfound interest in rugged devices. The specs, as revealed by a listing on GFXBench, include a rather low-resolution 4.65-inch screen (800×480), dual-core 1.2GHz Snapdragon processor, 1GB of RAM, 5-megapixel rear camera, 0.3-megapixel front-camera, and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.
Expect this one to launch before the year ends, though whether an international launch outside Korea and China will happen remains to be seen.
