Apple working on a 20-inch foldable MacBook with Samsung’s OLED panel

According to TheElec, Apple has started working on a MacBook with a 20-inch foldable screen. The company will use a 20.25-inch OLED display, with the display made by an unknown South Korean supplier. While there are multiple South Korean display suppliers, with the expertise Samsung has in making foldable devices and displays, you cannot rule out Samsung here.

It was previously reported that Apple is planning to release the best of the MacBook and iPad in a foldable form factor sometime in 2027. Since foldable devices require the use of OLED panels, Apple could go ahead with Samsung Display, which is already has established its name in this genre. Speaking of this foldable MacBook, it measures 20.25 inches when unfolded and 15.3 inches when folded, which is bigger than the current largest iPad Pro but smaller than the 16-inch MacBook Pro.

There isn't any information on whether it is Samsung, so take this piece of information with a pinch of salt. Apple will be cautious about the release of this foldable MacBook and probably won't release it until both the MacBook and the iPad transition to OLED displays. Currently, only the high-end iPhone and the Apple Watch models have OLED displays, while other Apple products feature LCD or Mini-LED panels.

But that will change soon, as Apple has planned to release two models of the iPad with OLED displays in 2024. LG and Samsung will be supplying the OLED displays for the said iPad. So apart from Samsung, Apple could also turn to LG Display for the OLED panel for its foldable MacBook project, but it seems unlikely given Samsung's stellar quality.

Also, TheElec notes that Apple is looking to replace the iPad Mini with a foldable device that measures 10 inches, and a foldable iPhone is unlikely despite rumors surrounding it. Time will tell what is true and what is not, but you can share your thoughts on this development.
