According to a new report from ET News, Apple is developing a new design for batteries that is expected to offer better performance (increased battery life) compared to the design used for current battery packs. Reportedly, batteries based on the new design will be offered with the company’s products that will launch in 2025 or later.
Citing sources in the industry, the publication claims that Apple is experimenting with the composition of the cathode. Reportedly, the company is trying to use more silicon content in the battery in place of graphite, which would not only increase the battery capacity but also reduce the charging time. However, silicon is susceptible to expanding during the charging process. That’s probably why other brands haven’t taken this approach. Well, Apple has reportedly found a way to overcome this issue.
Currently, there’s no information about how much improvement the new battery design offers. However, even if it offers single-digit percentage improvements, it would benefit end users in a huge way. There’s no information about which products would use this technology but you expect the brand to offer it with almost all products that use a battery, including iPhone, Watch, and Mac. Reportedly, Apple has taken this step in the light of mixed reality (MR) products which require a lot of power.
Apple hired a Samsung SDI employee for new battery technology
Rumours about Apple developing a new battery technology have been around since 2018. A year later, the tech giant hired Soonho Ahn to lead the battery development initiative, who had previously worked for Samsung SDI, which further fueled the reports claiming that Apple is working on a new battery design.
