Last week, Microsoft completed the acquisition of Activision Blizzard, the company behind many popular game titles for PCs, gaming consoles, and smartphones, including Call Of Duty, Diablo, Overwatch, and World of Warcraft. A lot of people expected that Microsoft would bring older games from Activision Blizzard to Xbox Game Pass immediately after the acquisition was completed. Unfortunately, that won’t be happening.
Phil Spencer, Head of Xbox, has confirmed in a new Official Xbox Podcast that no game from Activision Blizzard will come to Xbox Game Pass before 2024. According to him, the acquisition took so long that Microsoft didn’t get time to bring older games from Activision Blizzard to Xbox Game Pass. Phil says “I would love it if there was some kind of secret celebration drop that’s coming in the next couple of weeks — there’s not”.
People’s expectations were based on the way Microsoft had brought 20 games from Bethesda to Xbox Game Pass just two days after acquiring the gaming company. “This acquisition is definitely long-term, so the fact that we’re not hitting day one with a bunch of games dropping into Game Pass is a little bit of a downer, but I’m very excited about the future. And I just want to be straight with people that that’s where we are” he added.
Earlier this month, Activision Blizzard announced on X (formerly known as Twitter) that it doesn’t plan on bringing the new games from the company, including Modern Warfare III and Diablo IV to Xbox Game Pass this year. However, it didn’t mean that the brand wouldn’t make the older versions of Call Of Duty and Diablo available on Xbox Game Pass in the near future. So, people had some expectations. Not anymore though.
