Almost one-third of smartphone users in the USA say their next smartphone will most likely fold in half. And according to the same survey, Apple is among the most preferred foldable phone brands, which is quite an achievement, considering that the company has yet to release a foldable phone.
A recent survey by Counterpoint Research shows that 26% of smartphone users are “most likely” to buy a foldable phone next. 16% of survey participants are “somewhat likely” to make this move, while 27% are unsure. Only 17% of smartphone users say they are “not at all” interested in foldable devices.
As for their preferred foldable phone design, phone users in the USA prefer the flip phone form factor more. 49% lean towards the flip phone, while only 35% prefer the book-like form factor made popular by the Galaxy Z Fold series.
40% of female respondents prefer the book-like form factor to 30% of male respondents. The study shows that flip-type foldable devices are more popular among men, with more than half preferring devices like the Galaxy Z Flip, and only 47% of female survey participants gravitate towards this form factor.
In 2022, the foldable phone customer base in the USA alone stood at 4.7 million, says to the market research firm.
The foldable phone market is split between Samsung and Apple fans
Interestingly enough, Apple is the second-most popular foldable phone brand in the USA, even though the company hasn't released such a device yet. Apple hasn't hopped on the foldable phone bandwagon, but 39% of survey participants say Apple is their preferred foldable phone brand.
It goes to show how powerful the Apple brand is among phone users in the USA. Apple fans stateside are highly confident in their preferred brand and willing to say they'd buy an Apple foldable phone before any other, even though they don't have the faintest idea how such an iOS device would look like or function.
Samsung still is the top foldable phone brand, with 46% of survey participants preferring the Korean brand. And the third-most preferred brand is Motorola. The latter company is working on releasing a new Razr foldable flip phone this year, which will compete with the Galaxy Z Flip 5.
