The codename “Upside Down Cake,” which has a dessert motif, for Android 14 was initially made public not long ago. Even though Android 14 won't be released to the public for some time, the codename revelation for Android 15 suggests that Google is already working on the 2024 edition of the OS. The codename for Android 15 has been revealed to be “Vanilla Ice Cream,” with the disclosure coming a little earlier than usual.

Mishaal Rahman revealed the news on Twitter, and the “Vanilla Ice Cream” codename can be spotted in AOSP (Android Open Source Project) as a series of code changes in Android's Trade Federation (Tradefed/TF). However, with Android 15 not expected until late next year, we don't know any specifics regarding new features yet.

What significance does the codename have for Android 15?

Android has a long history of naming its major updates after desserts in alphabetical sequence. The Android 14 operating system, which goes by the codename “Upside Down Cake,” will be released by Google later this year. A lot of Samsung smartphones will get the update, but with the Korean giant's One UI skin and features on top.

For those unaware, Android's dessert-themed moniker is basically meaningless for the end user. It's nevertheless a sweet reminiscence of the early days of Android, not to mention all the lovely statues that were erected on the Google campus to mark the debut of each major Android update. Unquestionably, Android has come a long way since then, and its release cycle has been much more refined.
