The foldable phone market appears to be in full swing. Foldable displays were a dream a few years ago, but Samsung opened the floodgates wide, and now, numerous OEMs are getting ready to release new foldable phones this year. Vivo is among them, and its so-called X Fold 2 may be released next month.

Vivo talked about the X Fold 2 at the Boao Forum in China, and through a new post on the social media network Weibo (via 91Mobiles), the OEM confirmed the “X Fold 2” name and hinted at an April launch for the device. Or, at the very least, Vivo will unveil many more details about the X Fold 2 next month.

A new Galaxy Z Fold competitor in the making?

Samsung's foldable phones are facing new competition from multiple brands. Vivo was said to be getting ready to release a foldable flip phone under the X Flip brand, and the same company is now preparing to launch the X Fold 2 book-like foldable to rival the Galaxy Z Fold series.

Whether or not the Vivo X Fold 2 will be released outside of China is unclear. Some companies, like Oppo, are getting ready to abandon the European market, while others, such as Honor, are preparing for an attack on a global scale.

Regardless of availability, the Vivo X Fold 2 is said to defeat the Galaxy Z Fold series in at least one way: it will beat the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 5 to the market and employ the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip earlier than Samsung's phone. On the other hand, Samsung will use an overclocked “for Galaxy” Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC for its upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 5, just like it did for the Galaxy S23 lineup.

Other specs the Vivo X Fold 2 should have are 12GB of RAM, an 8.03-inch foldable display, a 50MP + 10MP + 50MP camera combo, and a 4,800mAh battery with 120W fast charging. There's no word on build quality or IP rating yet, but by now, it's almost a guarantee that Samsung's Fold series is superior in these areas.
