A new report from Ming-Chi Kuo on Medium has revealed details about the cameras of the two upcoming smartphone lineups from Apple, the iPhone 16 and the iPhone 17.

iPhone 16 Pro to get 5x optical zoom telephoto camera

According to the analyst, the iPhone 16 Pro will feature the same telephoto camera that’s in the iPhone 15 Pro Max, which has a tetraprism design and a 5x optical zoom. For your reference, the iPhone 15 Pro doesn’t feature this camera. Instead, it has a telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom. So, if Apple doesn’t upgrade the telephoto camera on the iPhone 16 Pro Max, the two Pro models next year will have the same telephoto cameras.

iPhone 16 Pro models to have 48MP ultrawide cameras

Kuo also claims that the ultrawide camera of the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will have a 48MP resolution, which is four times higher compared to the 12MP resolution of ultrawide cameras on the current models. According to him, this camera sensor will have a size of 1/2.55-inch, a pixel size of 0.7µm, and a 6P lens design. Reportedly, it will use pixel-binning technology to offer 12MP images with a pixel size of 1.4µm.

iPhone 17 series to get 24MP selfie cameras

Coming to the iPhone 17 lineup, the analyst says that all the models in the series will feature a front-facing camera with 24MP resolution and a 6P lens design, which would be a huge upgrade compared to the iPhone 15 models, which offer a 12MP selfie camera with a 5P lens design. According to him, the ultrawide cameras on the iPhone 16 Pro models and the selfie camera on the iPhone 17 models will be supplied by Genius.

There’s still a lot of time for the iPhone 16 series to arrive, let alone the iPhone 17 series. A lot could change by that time. So, it would be better not to consider this as the final specifications for the upcoming smartphones.
