In May 2023, @URedditor claimed that the rear cameras on the iPhone 16 would be aligned vertically, as opposed to those on the iPhone 13, iPhone 14, and iPhone 15 which are aligned diagonally. In December 2023, MacRumors revealed renders of the phone’s prototype with the new camera arrangement. Now, Majin Bu has made a post on X/Twitter that not only corroborates the previous reports but also reveals schematics of the new camera arrangement and design.
According to the post from Majin Bu, the iPhone 16 will have two cameras at the rear placed one below the other in a pill-shaped camera bump with each camera having its own ring. It looks like a combination of the iPhone X’s and the iPhone 11’s camera arrangement and design. MacRumors corroborates Majin Bu’s schematics, and the publication has also created renders of the phone’s prototype based on the latest information.
Previous reports suggest that this change will allow the iPhone 16 to record Spatial Video (recording this type of video requires the wide and ultrawide cameras to be aligned vertically), just like the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Plus, it will bring a parity between the design of the non-Pro and Pro models. Apple is also moving from a mechanical to a capacitive Action Button and adding a Capture Button on the iPhone 16.
