Samsung may get more iPhone OLED panel orders as BOE quality slips
According to a report from OLED-Info, BOE has been struggling to meet Apple's quality standards for its LTPS OLED panels for iPhones. LTPS OLED panels are used in non-Pro iPhone models such as the iPhone 14, iPhone 15, 15 Plus, iPhone 16, and iPhone 16 Plus.
Since the beginning of 2024, BOE has reportedly managed to deliver just 7-8 million OLED panels, drastically falling short of the 40 million orders from Apple. These issues will reportedly take at least six weeks to resolve. Display industry insiders seem to believe that Apple will redirect most of those orders to Samsung Display.
While Apple also buys OLED panels from LG Display, Samsung Display's local rival, the iPhone maker might not task LG with additional orders as it is primarily focused on making LTPO OLED panels for iPhone Pro models (like iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max).
The story continues with our Galaxy S25 Ultra hands-on video below.
This isn't the first time BOE has struggled to meet Apple's quality standards. Over the past couple of years, it has faced quality issues several times. In 2023, BOE faced light leakage issues around the Dynamic Island display cutout for the iPhone 15 and the iPhone 15 Plus.
If the new report is accurate, it could mean more business and revenue for Samsung Display. And it couldn't have come at a better time, as Samsung Electronics is struggling with falling profits due to issues related to its high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips used in AI accelerators.
