Samsung introduced a much bigger cover screen to its Galaxy Z Flip lineup last year with the Galaxy Z Flip 5. This year, the company is making sure that the big screen is put to good use. No, it still isn't allowing all apps to be run on the cover screen, but it is working with developers to bring the ability to use some email apps.
Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 cover screen can run Gmail and Outlook apps
During our briefing session before yesterday's Galaxy Unpacked event, Samsung revealed that it is working with app developers to optimize four apps—Facebook, Gmail, Google Maps, and Google Messages—to the Galaxy Z Flip 6's cover screen. Since the Galaxy Z Flip 5 also has the same cover screen as the Galaxy Z Flip 6, these optimized will likely be released with the One UI 6.1.1 update.
A report from 9To5Google claims that Microsoft's Outlook app is also being optimized for the cover screen of Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip phones. So, the app will likely be compatible with the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and the Galaxy Z Flip 6. It isn't clear exactly when these apps will be available for use, though, and it could take a couple of months for that to happen.
You can watch the Galaxy Z Flip 6's cover screen in action in our hands-on video below.
The Galaxy Z Flip 5 and the Galaxy Z Flip 6 have a 3.4-inch Super AMOLED screen with a resolution of 720 x 748 pixels and 1,600 nits of peak brightness. The screen can be used to check notifications, time, weather, and other data from Samsung's stock app widgets. It can also run a few apps that are optimized by app developers.
Hopefully, Samsung will bring more Flex Window-optimized apps to the cover screens of its Galaxy Z Flip series phones.
