Korea FTC to investigate Samsung’s Game Optimization Service (GOS) scandal

Well, Samsung knows how to keep itself in the headlines, for good and bad reasons. While the popularity of the Galaxy S22 series is keeping them shining on the internet, there is this GOS or game optimization service scandal, revealing that Samsung made false promises while advertising their Galaxy S22 series phones.

In a recent report by The Korea Herald, a complaint has been filed by infuriated consumers of the Galaxy S22 series to the FTC (Fair Trade Commission), claiming that Samsung violated the advertisement law during the promotion of the Galaxy S22 flagships. Notably, the company used the term “best performance ever” when talking about the performance of the Galaxy S22 series.

But in reality, it turns out that these were false claims by Samsung. To further investigate the matter, South Korea’s antitrust watchdog, the FTC, will be looking into this matter.

Some consumers found that the GOS software runs for other resource-intensive apps as well

In the official press release, Samsung announced that the Galaxy S22 series comes with a 120Hz refresh rate display. This would allow for a smoother transition and overall better usability. However, when tested by gamers, it was found that while playing games, 120Hz isn't provided.

The reason behind it is that Samsung forcefully runs an app in the background called Game Optimization Service, or in short, GOS. This service basically optimizes the performance of the phone when playing games for better battery life and to avoid overheating problems.

Worse, this GOS software cannot be manually turned off. Now, Geekbench performed a test and found some shocking results. According to Geekbench, the Samsung Galaxy S22 series only offers 53.9% of the promised performance when GOS runs in the background.

Users are angry over the fact that Samsung hid such crucial information about the actual performance numbers of their Galaxy S22 series. Although Samsung Electronics has stated that it will include a “performance mode” in the GOS app, it still refuses to accept that GOS is enabled for apps other than games.
