Samsung and Apple routinely trade spots at the top of the list of the world's leading smartphone vendors. Since Samsung is fresh off the launch of the Galaxy S24 series, it's not surprising to see that it beat Apple in global smartphone sales for the month of February 2024.
Credit must be given where it's due, though. The Galaxy S24's launch played a major role in enabling Samsung to overtake Apple and regain the top spot. Galaxy AI remains one of the biggest selling points of the new flagship series from the company.
Galaxy AI is helping Samsung sell a lot of phones
Samsung had been trailing Apple in second place on this list for five months until February 2024, where it was finally able to overtake the iPhone maker. Samsung's combined smartphone sales came in at 19.69 million units in February 2024 compared to 17.41 million units for Apple in second place, according to data from Counterpoint and Hana Securities.
Sales of the Galaxy S24 series amounted to 6.53 million units in the period under review, contributing to this 20% share of the global market in February. In Europe specifically, Samsung ended the month with a 34% share of all smartphone sales, retaining its top position.
Galaxy AI even enabled Samsung to increase its share of sales in the US, in Apple's own backyard, to 36%, an increase of 16 percentage points from January 2024. The Galaxy S24 has done particularly well in the United States, making up 52% of Samsung's total smartphone sales in the country that month.
Samsung's going all-in on Galaxy AI, even bringing it to the wider flagship lineup with the release of One UI 6.1, enabling owners of the Galaxy S23 and Galaxy Tab S9 series, in addition to the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5, to try out some of the best software features introduced with this year's flagship phones on their devices.
