The August 2021 security update has started landing on the international variants of the Galaxy Note 9. Just ahead of the third anniversary of the smartphone's release, at that. Anyone still using this particular model should now be on the lookout for the firmware upgrade designated as the release N960FXXS9FUH1.
Samsung Germany is spearheading this rollout in Europe, as it often does. But the stateside branch of the tech giant actually beat it to the punch this time around; the unlocked Galaxy Note 9 units in the U.S. are already receiving the August 2021 update stateside as of yesterday.
It's still not over for the Galaxy Note 9
Looking at the wider picture, the Galaxy Note 9 is currently one of the oldest Samsung devices still receiving monthly security patches. Granted, it's just about to turn three next week. Meaning that the August 1st, 2021 patch level might very well be the final monthly firmware release for the device. Or the penultimate one, at best.
On the bright side, none of that is to say that it's over for the Galaxy Note 9. If you're still rocking the 2018 flagship, you still have a full year's worth of quarterly security updates to look forward to. The Galaxy Note 8, on the other hand… yeah, that one is definitely at the end of its lifespan.
But with each passing generation, the Galaxy Note series continues to deliver excellent value for money. Even in a year with no new generation to speak of. Let's just hope Samsung gets back to updating its iconic line next year.
