Galaxy phones can get newer Google Play system updates again

Firmware

If you tried to install Google Play system updates on your Galaxy phone late last year, you might recall facing a strange issue. Most Galaxy phones were stuck on the July or older Google Play system update, and trying newer updates led Galaxy phone users to a “ghost” install that didn't change the Play system version, no matter how many times you may have tried installing it in a never-ending loop.

In other words, Google Play system updates were bugged on most Samsung phones as late as December 2023. However, the issue appears to have been resolved, and most Galaxy phones should now be able to download and install the newer November 2023 Google Play system update.

Strangely enough, a similar pattern unfolded in 2022, when most Galaxy phones couldn't get past the July version, yet the problem disappeared in January 2023.

Samsung phones back on track with Play system updates

Together with our colleagues at GalaxyClub, we can confirm that the November 2023 Google Play system update is available for the Galaxy S22, Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23 FE, and Galaxy Z Fold 5, at the very least.

The Galaxy A34 and Galaxy A54 also appear to have received the newer Play system update, but for reasons unknown, you might have to try updating these phones a few times before the new version sticks.

If you want to verify if you can install the November 2023 Google Play system update on your Samsung phone, open the Settings app, access “Security and privacy,” go to “Updates,” followed by “Google Play system update,” and tap “Check for update.”
