When the Galaxy S20 FE came out, it was an instant hit thanks to an aggressive price tag and features that were almost exactly the same as or somewhat better than the Galaxy S20 and S20+. It was a proper flagship device, basically, but where it fell behind the non-FE Galaxy S20 models was software support.
As far as software features were concerned, the Galaxy S20 FE didn't miss out on anything. But when it came to updates, Samsung treated it somewhat separately from the main Galaxy S20 trio. It didn't receive the latest security updates at the same time as the Galaxy S20, S20+, and S20 Ultra, and when Android 11 came along, Galaxy S20 FE owners had to wait longer for their first major OS upgrade.
Well, that seems to finally be changing: Samsung has released the official Android 12 and One UI 4.0 update for the Galaxy S20 FE on the same day as the S20, S20+, and S20 Ultra. This wasn't expected. After all, the Galaxy S20 FE wasn't included in the One UI 4.0 beta program for the Galaxy S20 series, just like it wasn't included in the One UI 3.0 beta program last year.
But Samsung has managed to bring the official update to the Fan Edition phone alongside the other Galaxy S20-series phones, and that's great to see. One can only hope Samsung can also match the schedule for security patches for all four Galaxy S20 smartphones going forward and will also treat the upcoming Galaxy S21 FE as equal to the Galaxy S21, S21+, and S21 Ultra when it comes to software updates (for as long as it's possible, of course).
