Galaxy S24 Ultra AI performance leaves Google Pixel 8 Pro in the dust

According to a whitepaper published by the technology testing and advising organization Signal65, the Galaxy S24 Ultra is significantly faster than the Google Pixel 8 Pro when it comes to AI performance in tasks such as summarization, live translation, and image editing.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 obliterates the Google Tensor chip in the Pixel 8 Pro

The Galaxy S24 Ultra outperformed the Pixel 8 Pro in three of the top AI benchmarking tools, with at least three times the performance and up to eight times the performance of the Google flagship in some scenarios.

Interestingly, the Galaxy S24 Ultra is also faster at removing objects from photos. That's a feature that Google has been working on longer than Samsung, but with Galaxy AI, the Korean giant has levelled the playing field.

In fact, the whole process of object removal on the Galaxy S24 Ultra, from tapping the object remover option and tracing around the object to getting the final result, happens at a faster pace even compared to some desktop image editing apps such as GIMP.

It's worth noting that the whitepaper is mostly about AI features that are processed on-device. It's easy to see why the Galaxy S24 Ultra obliterated the Pixel 8 Pro. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip in the former is considerably more powerful than Google's in-house Tensor chip, which aren't designed to offer the best performance.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3's neural processing unit (NPU), which handles all AI and machine learning operations, is particularly fast. Google could catch up to Samsung with the Pixel 9 Pro and its new Tensor chip. But at the time of writing (August 12), it's trailing by a sizable margin.

Check out the whitepaper by downloading its PDF file from this link if you want a detailed rundown. There's some overly flowery marketing language in there as Samsung was the one to commission this research. But if you can get past that, the whitepaper is an interesting read.
