Samsung showcased several new Galaxy S24 features on the stage during the Galaxy Unpacked 2024 event last night. Those features include improved camera quality, improved camera for social media apps, brighter screens, faster performance, improved cooling system, and longer battery life. However, the company also left out a lot of smaller features, like unlimited font options for the lock screen clock widget and the ability to capture 24MP images.
Yes, the Galaxy S24 Ultra can capture 24MP images now, just like the iPhone 15 series.
Galaxy S24 Ultra now supports 24MP photos, but there's a catch
The Galaxy S24 Ultra can capture 24MP photos, in addition to 12MP, 50MP, and 200MP resolutions. However, this new photo resolution option is only available in the Expert RAW camera app on the smartphone. As you can see in the image below, the new 24MP photo resolution option is highlighted with a yellow dot on its top-right corner in the Expert RAW camera app. It remains to be seen if these 24MP photos have higher details than 12MP ones and if they suffer from the loss of color accuracy or dynamic range, which is usually seen on 50MP and 200MP images.
From what we've seen on the iPhone 15, 24MP photos have slightly more detail than 12MP pixel-binned images, but the file sizes of those photos aren't as huge as 48MP/50MP and 200MP images. So you can get more details without sacrificing storage on your device. The 24MP photo shot using the Expert RAW camera app on the Galaxy S24 Ultra had a file size of around 10MB, and its resolution was 5,712 x 4,284 pixels. This feature was leaked a few weeks ago.

It isn't clear yet if this 24MP resolution is available for the 50MP telephoto camera as well. Since Samsung brings some features from the Expert RAW camera app to the stock app with future phones/software updates from time to time, it is possible that this feature will come to the stock camera app via the Camera Assistant app or to existing high-end phones. However, we can't be sure about it.
