The Galaxy S24 Ultra, which largely keeps the same camera hardware as its predecessor, may still offer improved image and video quality with the help of improved processing and AI. Samsung may also borrow a feature that Apple introduced with the iPhone 15 series for the Galaxy S24.
Galaxy S24 Ultra may capture 24MP resolution images, like the iPhone 15
According to tipster Ahmed Qwaider, the Galaxy S24 Ultra will capture 24MP images instead of 12MP default. Although his tweet isn't very clear, we think he meant that the default image resolution on the Galaxy S24 Ultra will be 24MP instead of 12MP. The Photo Remaster feature in the built-in image editor offers more details, while the built-in Gallery app offers three options: Portrait, Remaster, and Delete. It will reportedly have an ND Filter option in Expert RAW to adjust lighting while preserving colors. However, this feature is already available.
If this claim is true, Samsung may have likely copied the feature from Apple and its latest iPhone series. The iPhone 15 series uses its 48MP camera to capture images in a binned-down 12MP resolution (after 4-in-1 pixel binning) and then combines it with 48MP images to merge them into a 24MP image. This method leaves more detail in images without improving the file size by a huge margin.
Samsung's phones offer the ability to capture 12MP, 50MP, and 200MP images from the primary camera. However, 50MP and 200MP images do not have a dynamic range as wide as it is in 12MP images. Moreover, 50MP and 200MP images take up a lot of space due to higher file sizes. So, Apple's method offers a good balance between details and file size. Samsung may do the same with the Galaxy S24 Ultra.
Galaxy S24 Ultra camera specifications
The Galaxy S24 Ultra is rumored to feature a 200MP primary camera with OIS, a 12MP ultrawide camera with autofocus, a 10MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom and OIS, and a 50MP telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom and OIS. The phone is rumored to be able to offer 10x optical zoom-like image quality, thanks to its 5x optical zoom lens and in-sensor crop from its 50MP camera.
