Before the launch of the Galaxy S24, it was rumored to have a satellite messaging feature for emergencies. However, the feature was missing from the Galaxy S24. Now, some Galaxy S24 and Galaxy Z Fold 6 users have started seeing satellite messaging features in the USA.

T-Mobile's Galaxy S24 and Z Fold 6 users start seeing signs of satellite messaging

Some Galaxy S24+, Galaxy S24 Ultra, and Galaxy Z Fold 6 users on T-Mobile's network (postpaid line) in the USA have started seeing the satellite messaging feature on their phones. The new feature called ‘Satellite Networks' is now visible to them in the Settings menu.

It will only be available to users who applied to test the ‘T-Mobile Starlink‘ service. This service aims to bring cell phone connectivity everywhere using Starlink technology and a constellation of low-earth orbit (LEO) satellites. This service was announced in August 2022 and is finally close to being available for beta testing.

As you can see in the screenshots above, you can find the new feature by navigating to Settings » Connections » Satelite Networks. Once the beta testing is started, users on compatible phones can send and receive text messages even when there is no cellular network nearby. However, it works best with a clear view of the sky.

The new menu clearly explains that the phone may take longer (than usual) to send and receive text messages via the satellite system. It also clarifies that weather (like cloudy conditions) and certain structures may affect the satellite connection.

This feature should technically work with any phone with LTE connectivity. However, T-Mobile and Starlink currently only support some phones, and Samsung's phones are included in the list. Users claim the new menu appeared on their phones after installing the December 2024 security patch.

Once the beta testing is complete and its stable version is launched, it should work with all modern phones with LTE connectivity.

Starlink has partnered with other network operators, including Optus, Rogers, Entel, Kiddi, One NZ, and Salt, to provide the service in Australia, Canada, Chile,  Japan, New Zealand, Peru, and Switzerland, respectively.
