New OLED tech could make Galaxy S26 Ultra’s screen brighter, more efficient

Samsung hasn't even unveiled the Galaxy S25 Ultra yet, but some details about next year's flagship, the Galaxy S26 Ultra, have already been revealed. A new report claims that Samsung's flagship phone for next year will have an even brighter and more efficient screen.

Galaxy S26 Ultra's OLED screen could have CoE technology

According to a report from TheElec, Samsung is planning to apply the Color Filter on Encapsulation (CoE) technology for the Galaxy S26 Ultra's screen. This technology brings higher screen brightness and improves the power efficiency of the OLED panel.

The CoE technology replaces polarizing plates in OLEDs with color filters. It also changes the general Pixel Define Layer (PDL) to a black PDL. These changes make the panel thinner and improves light transmittance. Hence, lower power is needed to produce the same amount of brightness.

Black PDL can reduce the light from reflecting inside the panel. To make this change, the existing orange photosensitive polyimide (PSPI) material is replaced with a black material between red, green, and blue sub-pixels. Moreover, a color filter (CF) is printed at a low temperature on a thin film encapsulation (TFE) layer.

The CoE technology was first used in the Galaxy Z Fold 3's foldable OLED screen. The Galaxy S26 Ultra would be the first slab-style smartphone to use an OLED panel with CoE technology.

Samsung Display will reportedly offer OLED panels with CoE to Samsung MX for the Galaxy S26 Ultra. It isn't clear if a similar panel would be used in the Galaxy S26 and the Galaxy S26+.

The Galaxy S24 series already uses an OLED panel with up to 2,600 nits of peak brightness. If the new report is accurate, we could see the display brightness cross the 3,000 nits mark next year. Or, Samsung could choose to keep the same brightness to improve the battery life.
