Samsung's foldable lineup will be getting bigger this year with the addition of the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and the Galaxy Z Flip 5. Both models will no doubt bring some important upgrades, such as the rumored waterdrop hinge that will finally allow Samsung's foldable phones to fold shut without leaving a gap between the two sides.
For the Galaxy Z Flip 5, rumors also indicate a major upsizing of the cover display is on the cards. The first Z Flip model had a tiny 1.1-inch cover display, while the two models after that (the Z Flip 3 and the Z Flip 4) brought the cover screen size up to 1.9 inches. It wasn't a huge upgrade, but it helped make the cover screen somewhat usable, which wasn't the case on the first Galaxy Z Flip.
Galaxy Z Flip 5 cover screen will be massive compared to the Z Flip 4
The most recent rumor about the Galaxy Z Flip 5's outer display came with some concept images and video that, according to the leakster (SuperRoader), show a Z Flip 5 design that is “200000% real”. That concept showed the larger, oddly shaped outer screen, and our sources have now confirmed that concept was pretty spot on, and we have our own mockup based on the actual design to share with you.
The display area on the outside of the Z Flip 5 will pretty much cover as much space as possible, enabling us to do a lot more without having to unfold the phone. Yes, the best use of the larger outer screen will no doubt be for taking high-quality selfies using the rear cameras, but tasks like checking notifications and replying to messages should also be more convenient to perform.
We will need to wait and see if Samsung will go as far as letting users use entire apps on the cover display, which is something you can do on the Motorola RAZR. We are also not sure of the exact size of the cover screen. We've been told it will be somewhere between 3 to 4 inches, although it's likely to be on the lower end of that range if we were to take a guess based on the dimensions of the Galaxy Z Flip 4.
As for the main foldable display, there's no information on whether or not it will bring any changes. A waterdrop hinge should reduce the visibility of the crease, but again, nothing can be said for certain at this time. But hey, this is Samsung we're talking about, so it shouldn't be long before we see the gaps in our knowledge of the Z Flip 5's specs and features begin to fill up as more rumors and leaks make their way online, so stay tuned!
