After using a 1.9-inch cover display for its Galaxy Z Flip series for two consecutive years, Samsung is ready to upgrade this key hardware element. Today, at Galaxy Unpacked in Seoul, Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Z Flip 5, featuring a large and gorgeous 3.4-inch cover display. And here are its best features.
The name of the new and improved cover display is “Flex Window,” and Samsung says it is now 3.78x larger than the previous generation. The panel is protected by Gorilla Glass Victus 2 (same as the Z Flip 5's back panel) and is now more useful and customizable than ever.
Widgets, Wallet, Quick Replies, and great personalization options
By enlarging the Galaxy Z Flip 5's cover screen, Samsung was able to create new widgets, tools, personalization options, and use cases for its foldable flip phone.
The new cover screen lets users check on the weather, control music playback with the Media Controller widget, watch stocks through the Google Finance widget, and more. Not only are these widgets beautiful and useful, but they can all be viewed at a glance by pinching the cover screen to activate a new Multi Widget View.
The cover screen also offers easy access to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity options, Quick Settings, and a Quick Reply feature, complete with a QWERTY keyboard.
Users can also check the chat and call history from the cover screen. And when in need, Galaxy Z Flip 5 users can conveniently access Samsung Wallet, QR codes, coupons, membership cards, boarding passes, health passes, and digital keys by swiping up on the cover screen.
Of course, the new Flex Window also works with the hinge's Flex Mode and FlexCam, and now enables better Dual Preview camera capabilities. In addition, users can review images, adjust color tones, or delete unwanted photos through the Flex Window.
Furthermore, when paired with a Galaxy Watch 6, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 can sync watch face designs with the Flex Window. This creates a more seamless UI across devices and demonstrates Samsung's commitment to improving the experience of its device ecosystem.
Finally, Samsung developed a new Flipsuit Case that boasts a changeable NFC card and takes advantage of the new cover screen's size and capabilities. This combination lets users match the Flex Window design with their Flipsuit Case, thus making it even easier to express their style.
