TL;DR

  • Samsung has slimmed the phone down to 6.1mm when unfolded and 13.1mm when folded, while reducing the weight to just 180g.
  • The company has also introduced its new Flex Titanium display structure, which is designed to strengthen the foldable display, improve impact resistance, and reduce the visibility of the crease.

Samsung fans have come to expect certain evolutionary changes from its new premium phones every year. At the very least, the new devices are expected to be thinner and lighter than their predecessors.

That's exactly the case for the Galaxy Z Flip 8. The handset is not just thinner and lighter than the model it replaces, but it's also more durable.

It's a small step for foldables, a giant leap for foldable buyers

Samsung confirmed today that the Galaxy Z Flip 8 measures 6.1mm when unfolded compared to its predecessor's 6.5mm. When folded, the device measures 13.1mm vs 13.7mm. The Galaxy Z Flip 8 weighs 180g while the model it replaces came in at 188g.

The handset is also more durable thanks to Samsung's new Flex Titanium technology. It's an innovative display structure that Samsung developed to make foldable phones thinner while making the panels stronger.

It combines a titanium-alloy film within the panel itself which is reinforced by an enhanced titanium plate. This considerably enhances display support, improves pressure and impact absorption while also reducing the crease visibility.

On the surface, these changes may not look too dramatic, but they go a long way in providing users the peace of mind that their foldable phone will be able to go the distance with them. The Armor Aluminum frame further enhances the overall durability of the device.
