Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip series smartphones offer many functionalities that non-foldable phones don’t. That includes allowing you to take pictures of yourself with rear cameras using the cover display, keeping the device in the upright position without using a stand or a case to watch videos, and much more. Those are also the things that the company highlights to advertise the Galaxy Z Flip lineup. Well, the brand is now showcasing another use case for these phones: mounting them on police officers to help them with various tasks.
Samsung has revealed that two years ago, Kimberling City Police and Indian Point Police conducted a pilot program where they mounted the Galaxy Z Flip series phones on police officers to help them increase their efficiency by using foldable phones in various methods. That included using them as body-worn cameras, marking this the first time police officers have used a foldable device in this way. It also makes Galaxy Z Flip phones the first foldable devices to be used as a body camera by police officers. That’s just the beginning though.
Samsung customized Galaxy Z Flip for police officers
Samsung collaborated with Visual Labs, a company that offers body camera solutions, to customize Galaxy Z Flip phones to start recording a video when the officer presses volume buttons, by detecting high-speed pursuits, when connected to a dash cam, or when the emergency lights are activated.
At this point, you might be thinking “Why use a Galaxy Z Flip device as a body camera when you can use an actual body camera?” Well, that’s because, a body camera serves only one purpose, which is recording videos, whereas a Galaxy Z Flip serves many purposes, including using it for communication (calls, text, data) and using agency-specific applications (criminal justice database queries and other such stuff) on it.
That might make you think “Any smartphone could do that. So why go for a Galaxy Z Flip device?” Well, that’s most likely because a non-foldable phone might look too big and out of place if you mount that on a body. A Galaxy Z Flip device won't as it can fold in half, occupying very little space on a body.
Galaxy Z Flip turned out to be a very useful device for police officers
At the end of the pilot program, officers reported successful results. With that, San Benito and the Craighead County Sheriff’s departments also adopted Galaxy Z Flip devices. That’s not all. Soon, 25 metro police departments across five states will adopt the Galaxy Z Flip series smartphones.
That will make the Galaxy Z Flip series even more popular, which could increase the sales of these phones. The Galaxy Z Flip 6 is the newest device in the lineup. If you are interested in getting it, click on the link below to get the best deal on it. You can also check our review of the phone here.
