Samsung finally got around to acknowledging the ongoing situation in Ukraine and confirmed that it would stop selling smartphones in Russia. Now, Samsung has opted to drop the “Z” branding from its iconic foldables, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3.
Samsung's Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian websites now all list the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 as the Galaxy Fold 3 and Galaxy Flip 3. The disparity between the URL and product page confirms that the change is fairly recent. Interestingly enough, Samsung's Ukraine website still has the Z branding intact, which is odd, as that should have been the first place to be wiped clean of the symbol.
Samsung seems to have made the changes on the down low, as there is no official statement from the company regarding the abrupt product name change, that too of its flagship products. As to why Samsung decided to implement the last-minute change, the answer is fairly obvious.
Over the past month, the symbol “Z” has become synonymous with the Russian military, something that former Soviet bloc countries aren't too thrilled about. The anti-Russia sentiment in these regions could be quite high, because of their proximity to the country. It remains to be seen if Samsung decided to rename its foldables globally as a sign of solidarity with the Ukrainian people.
