Stateside owners of some Samsung foldable phones can look forward to new security updates this week. Samsung has released the January update, which includes the first security patch of 2024, for the Galaxy Z Fold 4, Galaxy Z Flip 4, and the Galaxy Z Flip 5 in the US.
The Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4 already received the January update in some countries earlier this month, and it is now available for both carrier and factory-unlocked variants of the two phones in the US. These updates can be identified by a firmware version that ends in EWL9.
As for the Galaxy Z Flip 5, this is the first instance of Samsung's most recent flip phone getting the update anywhere in the world, and only for carrier-locked variants at this time. The latest firmware version for the Flip 5 update ends in BWL7.
These three foldables recently received Android 14 and One UI 6.0, so it's not surprising that the latest updates only bring security enhancements. The January 2024 patch fixes 80+ security flaws on Galaxy smartphones and tablets – 75 of them are common to all Android devices and the rest are exclusive to Samsung devices. More details are available here for anyone interested.
If you own a Flip 4, Flip 5, or Fold 4, you can check for the update by using the Download and install option in the phone's Settings » Software update menu. You can also attempt to upgrade your phone by flashing the latest firmware available in our archives using a Windows PC.
