Samsung unveiled two book-style foldable phones at its July 22 Unpacked event: the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. Despite lacking the Ultra branding, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is arguably the more interesting of the two because of its new form factor.
It is Samsung's widest and lightest book-style foldable phone ever. But just how wide is it?
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 measures 123.9 x 81.9 x 9.7mm when folded and 123.9 x 161.4 x 4.5mm when fully unfolded, and weighs just 201g. This makes it 18.2mm wider than the Galaxy Z Fold 7 (158.4 x 143.2 x 4.2mm) and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra (158.4 x 143.2 x 4.2mm) when unfolded.
Its substantially wider aspect ratio makes the device a lot more versatile for media consumption and web browsing.
Galaxy Z Fold 8 dimensions and weight:
Its cover screen measures 5.5 inches diagonally and has a 10:16 aspect ratio in portrait orientation, making it well suited for using apps and watching vertical videos on Instagram Reels, TikTok, and YouTube Shorts.
Rotate it to landscape orientation, and it becomes a compact display that is large enough for watching regular widescreen videos.

The 7.6-inch inner screen has a 4:3 aspect ratio in landscape orientation, offering a good balance for using apps and watching regular videos, such as movies and TV shows. In portrait orientation, it is well suited for browsing the web, using one app with multiple panes, or using two apps side by side.
Both its screens use Dynamic AMOLED 2X panels with a 1-120Hz variable refersh rate, QHD+ resolution, HDR10+ certification, and perfect blacks. The inner screen can reach peak brightness of up to 3,000 nits and has an anti-reflective coating to fight glare and reflections.

For watching videos, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is better suited than the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and previous-generation Galaxy Z Fold devices. It could feel a bit wide in your pant pockets, but the change is worth it for the versatility it offers.
