Samsung manufactures the most durable foldable phones on the market. The company never stopped improving build quality and finding new solutions, and the latest Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 foldable phones are even tougher than their predecessors.

The Korean tech giant says it enhanced the durability of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 through design improvements and by using stronger materials. The Dual Rail Hinge has a strengthened folding edge that offers better shock distribution, and the Armor Aluminum frames boast 10% higher scratch resistance.

Samsung also worked on the foldable displays and added another protective layer. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 foldable screen have better shock absorption capabilities and a less visible crease. And, there's more.

New foldable phones have an improved IP rating

Although the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 have the same water-resistance rating as the previous models, they now offer better protection against solid particles.

More details after our Galaxy Z Flip 6 hands-on video…

The previous foldable phones had an IPX8 rating, with “X” indicating there was no data available to specify the level of protection against solid particles and dust.

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Flip 6, on the other hand, have an IP48 rating. A “4” on the ingress protection rating scale indicates the device is resistant to ingress of solid objects greater than 1mm, such as slender screws, most wires, large ants, and so on.

This means the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Flip 6 aren't technically dust-resistant, but they now offer at least some protection against ingress from solid objects.

Story continues after our Galaxy Z Fold 6 hands-on video…

Previously, we've seen reports of foldable devices — particularly the Galaxy Z Fold — failing around the hinge due to foreign objects getting inside the phones, and possibly due to the deterioration of the Sweeper mechanism.

Although things already improved with the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Flip 5 from last year, Samsung is clearly trying to find even better solutions. This new IP48 rating boasted by the latest models might help improve things greatly and lower the failure rate of foldables even more. Time will tell, but things are looking better and better for foldable phone fans.
