Galaxy Z Fold and Flip 6 are the first phones delivered by drone in Korea

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 are the first phones in Korea to be delivered by drone. The service is limited to a few regions, but Samsung aims to speed up deliveries in these key areas where shipment operations could suffer delays.

Specifically, Samsung will deliver its foldable phones by drone in areas near Jeju Island and the coastal cities of Yeosu and Tongyeong. Deliveries by drone are to start on July 19. The tech giant shared a 2-minute video showcasing some of the drones in action.

Samsung expects the drone service to significantly shorten product delivery times even when ship operations and logistics may be affected. The company estimates that drones could cut Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Z Fold 6 delivery times from seven days to just one.

The drone delivery service appears to employ an element of AI. The company said, “As a company leading the AI era, we will continue to develop new technologies and services to improve consumer convenience and rights.”

Expanding drone operations to ship other Galaxy products

Samsung tested the drone delivery service on Jeju Island in June. Although the service will deliver only the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 initially, the company intends to expand its operations and be able to deliver other mobile devices by air, including tablets and wearables, as long as packages don't exceed the maximum weight of 10kg.

On July 19, drones will take off from drone centers on Jeju Island — in Sangmo-Ri and Geumneung — and will deliver the latest foldable devices to customers at Gapado, Marado, and Biyangdo.

Meanwhile, Samsung will use the drone delivery service in Yeosu while expanding to more than 10 regions, including Hawhado, Jedo, Tongyeong, Bisando, Jwado, and Manjido.

Samsung says it has developed the drone delivery service in collaboration with the Drone Test City Construction Project hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport. The service uses drone infrastructure, such as drones, takeoff and landing zones, and control systems developed by local authorities.

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 are the company's newest foldable phones, announced at Unpacked in Paris last week. They feature improved durability and hardware specs, and they're the first foldables to boast extended support with seven major OS updates planned.

You can pre-order the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 now. You probably won't get yours delivered by drone, but who knows what the future holds. In any case, the pre-order window ends July 24. Hit the button below for more details.
