As smartwatches have small screens and limited number of buttons, interacting with them is not very easy. That’s where voice assistants come into play. On your Samsung Galaxy Watch, that would be Google Assistant. It will do all the heavy lifting for you. You can ask it to set an alarm, send a message, or make it do a thousand other things. Well, Google is working on making that experience for you even better by replacing Assistant on Wear OS with its GenAI-powered Gemini. Let’s take a look.
Google to replace Assistant on Wear OS with Gemini
Folks at Android Authority tore down the latest beta version of the Google app for Android (version 16.0.5) to see if it has clues to upcoming features, and it indeed did.
They discovered that it has strings of code which suggest that Google is working on replacing Assistant on Wear OS with Gemini. There’s also evidence that you will be able to access Gemini using the “Gemini” wake word. What’s even more interesting is that code mentions “talk back and forth” which suggests that Gemini for Wear OS might come with Gemini Live, which will allow you to have a natural, free-flowing conversation with the digital assistant in the same way you talk to a person in real life.
The app even has an animation showing how Gemini would look on a smartwatch, which backs the revelations from the code. You can take a look at it in the video below.
As Gemini uses GenAI and is generally regarded as more capable than Assistant, it should be able to carry out a wider array of tasks on your Galaxy Watch, which will make using your wearable easier than before. Unfortunately, there are no details about what additional functionalities Gemini might offer over Assistant on your smartwatch. There’s also no information about when Google will roll out the new feature. Considering Google’s feature rollout history, the feature should arrive in the next few months.

Google’s latest move doesn’t come as a surprise as the company has been trying to bring Gemini to more platforms since it has launched the GenAI assistant.
