It was back in November 2020 when Samsung announced that Google Assistant would be coming to its smart TVs. It joined other voice assistants like Samsung's own Bixby and Amazon's Alexa to let users browse channels, control smart home devices, launch apps, and more.
Those features are still accessible through the other voice assistants that remain available for Samsung smart TVs, but the one from Google is going away. It has been confirmed that Google Assistant will no longer be available on Samsung smart TVs starting March 1, 2024.
Google Assistant will be removed from Samsung smart TVs on March 1
This makes the ongoing month of February the last month to use Google Assistant on your Samsung smart TV. It appears that the change isn't being made because Samsung no longer wants Assistant on its TVs or Google has decided it doesn't want to offer this service to Samsung. As Samsung highlights on its website, this is “due to a change in Google's policy.”
Google has recently announced some major changes for Assistant. It has removed nearly two dozen Assistant features from phones and smart speakers which the company says weren't regularly used. The company has also decided to shut down Google Assistant's Driving Mode by the end of this month. Google is looking to streamline Assistant and will add new features in the near future, possibly with an increased focus on Google Assistant with Bard.
Bixby and Amazon Alexa continue to be supported on Samsung smart TVs. So even though Assistant will no longer be available to respond to your voice commands, you still have a decent choice of powerful voice assistants to choose from.
